| Description: | |
The Postgraduate Diploma in Archaeology offered by the PGIAR annually draws more than ; 20 Applicants and it produces around 60 Diploma graduates every year .Only a few of the Diploma graduates get a chance to enter the M.Sc. in Archaeology Program as it is restricted to these who secure a merit pass in the Diploma examination. The proposed taught course M.A in Archaeology intends to accommodate the large number of Diploma Graduates who do not have a merit pass The M.Sc. in Archaeology program has been designed with a considerable component of field and practical work and was originally intended to develop a body of academically qualified professional archaeologists. However, most candidates who follow the PGIAR M.Sc. are not going to be doing any 'archaeology' as such once they finish their studies at PGIAR .The reason they have been compelled to enroll for the M.Sc. Course is that PGIAR is not offering any other 'taught course! At the same time a majority of our students seems to be looking ;or taught course type higher degrees It is under this context that a taught course M.A. in Archaeology is being proposed. This will be open to any one who passes the PGIAR Diploma and it is also suggested to limit the M.Sc. in Archaeology Program to the field oriented, professional people who are 'career archaeologists’ disregard of a 'merit pass' in the Diploma examination The proposed MA will not include a thesis term as presently planned in the M.Sc., but a ‘ thesis seminar’ course unit. Candidates will not be required to submit a 20,000 word research dissertation but a scholarly written paper(a research paper) on an approved topic that will be rated on a pass/fail basis by two examiners. Thus the M.A. will be a two-year taught course M.A. and will not qualify as a research degree The program of studies offered for the taught course M.A. will consist two streams of courses ; Stream 1 offers more archaeological course units than me Strer.m 2, which has more Art History course units |
