Description:  
Scope and Objectives</titile> The M.A. degree is a research degree awarded on the basis of a candidate's performance in a thesis, on an subject approved by the Institute, and a written examination consisting of two papers as prescribed below. The thesis may or may not be an original contribution to knowledge, but should at least be a creative synthesis or summation of existing research on a subject previously approved by the Institute. <p>Candidates will be required to sit for two written papers on the completion of the dissertation. These papers will be set by the PGIAR, on the basis of the fields of study broadly or will be specifically related to the subject</p> <title> Admission Criteria 3.1Except as provided for in action 3.2 below, a candidate may not seek admission to the Degree of Master of Philosophy Examination unless that candidate has : (a) passed with First or Second Class Honours the Special Degree Examination or the B.A. Examination in the relevant or a related subject or has an equivalent qualification of a recognized University; or (b) passed with First Class Honours the .General Arts Degree Examination having offered the relevant / related subject ; or (c) passed the Postgraduate Diploma in Archaeology Examination with a distinction ; or (d) qualified for registration at an examination consisting of such papers in the relevant/related subject which shall be recognized by the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology. [3.2. A person who has obtained at any other University a qualification equivalent to (1), (2), (3) above may apply for admission to this examination. Each such application will be considered on its merits and, except where direct admission is permitted or where the application is rejected, the applicant will be required to qualify for admission under para 4.1 above] Method of Assessment 4.1 The scheme of examination for the Degree of Master of Arts shall consist of the submission of a thesis, not generally exceeding 20,000 words in length. 4.3 Candidates may be required to submit themselves to a written examination on the subject of the thesis.
