| Description: | |
Even though Sri Lanka has a long history of building and running museums and over 150 museums and displayed collections of all types throughout the country, there are no professional training or educational programs or facilities for museum staff. The PGIAR's Postgraduate Diploma in Museology was first introduced in August 2002 to address this national need for training museum professionals in Sri Lanka. The course is primarily intended for the graduate staff of the Department of National Museums, Archaeological Department, Department of National Archives and the Central Cultural Fund.A limited number of places are open to personnel employed in museums and collections run by other government departments, universities and private organizations as well as to museum professionals from other countries in the region who have similar educational and training requirements. The aim of the course is to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge of the art and science of running a museum. These include methods, policies and procedures used in collection management and administration, care, including preventive conservation of collections, interpretation and communication and design and display in museum exhibitions and safety and security in museums. The course will also introduce students to the history of museums and provide an opportunity to gain practical experience in all aspects of setting up atemporary museum exhibition |
