Description:
Rationale and Objectives

It can be noted that there is a heightened interest among the general public and especially amongst the younger generations of professionals in business, teaching, civil services, and tourism industry on culture and heritage of Sri Lanka and South Asia. While this is a very positive development in terms of social and intellectual life of the contemporary Sri Lankan society, the discourse on culture and heritage at public level is adversely affected by uncritical arguments, beliefs, ideas, and debates on culture and heritage. The absence of an academic program that examines heritage in its widest sense, across the entire range of cultural traditions and practices is a glaring lacuna in the field of higher education that needs to be filled immediately. As such this program of studies intends to provide an intellectual environment to examine the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka in relation to the cultural history of human civilizations and its impact on the contemporary society.
