Scope and Objectives

The course leading to the Postgraduate Diploma in Archaeology aims at providing a sound knowledge of the discipline, in both theory and practice, for graduates with B.A., B.Sc., B.F.A., or equivalent Special or General Degrees, with professional and /or academic interests in Archaeology.

The specific purposes of the Postgraduate Diploma course will be; (a) to provide opportunities to those interested in the field of Archaeology to develop and widen their knowledge of the subject, especially of modern trends and techniques in Archaeology; and (b) to enable those seeking higher Postgraduate Degrees of the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (M.A., M.Sc., and M.Phil.,) to qualify to register for such degrees, to follow such courses and to sit the examinations. Program of Studies The course will consist of the following five subjects or 'course units' : 2. 1 Prehistory and Protohistory 2.2 Environmental Archaeology 2.3 Art History 2.4 Architectural History and Landscape Archaeology 2.5 Archaeological Methods and Techniques Admission Criteria

A Special or General Degree from a recognize university or an equivalent professional qualification acceptable to the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology and the Senate of the University of Kelaniya

Duration of the Course

The course of study for the Postgraduate Diploma in Archaeology examination shall be at least of one year duration full-time, or two years part-time, unless otherwise decided by the Senate. The examination shall be held as soon as possible after the completion of each course of study or course unit
