Introduction
Even though Sri Lanka has a long history of building and running museums and over 150 museums and displayed collections of all types throughout the country, there are no professional training or educational programs or facilities for museum staff.

The PGIAR Postgraduate Diploma in Museaology was introduced in August 2002, to address this national need for training museum professionals in Sri Lanka. The aim of the course is to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge of the art and science of running a museum.

• History and historicity of museums and heritage Management
• M useum interpretation and communication
• Museum management and administration
• Museum security and safety
• Conception, production and organization of a temporary museum exhibition

Course Structure
This course is conducted according to two-semesters and candidates have to complete 7 course units and earn 30 credits. At the end of the course, candidates should submit assignments and to be arranged a temporary exhibition unit.

Duration of the Course
One year (12 months) in duration, starting from January each year. The lecture hours are as follows:
Friday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Saturday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Sunday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Students should have attendance at least 80% of the lecture sessions.

Location of class – Classes are generally held at the PGIAR premises.
